Installing Ubuntu from USB
My new USB pen drive was finally delivered last week and this afternoon started work on trying to get Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) server installed on the little ITX machine.
Now, I am not a Linux geek, I am barely a Linux user :P so I had to do a little research into installing Ubuntu from a USB drive beforehand and thought it was going to be a doddle, how wrong was I!
A great start was from this community page on installing from a usb stick: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
But the results were somewhat perplexing, the install was looking for a CD ROM drive that (of course) does not exist.
After some much further digging I found many other sources that all really said the same thing, until I found this: https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/installation-guide/i386/boot-usb-files.html
Using the “flexible” method from that guide, it all just worked.
I was going to write out the steps that I took, but that guide gives a good overview and this page: http://www.eeewiki.org/ubuntu provides alot more information on the subject.
Now to sort out the servers…
