The Bowler Hatted Turner
I developed this website for my father, who is a wood turner and wears a bower hat.
I chose WordPress for its ease of use and its power for extending funtionality. I first began with by using the theme generator from http://www.yvoschaap.com/wpthemegen/ to create a simple dark green template. It was not until later that I stumbled across the SoftGreen template which fits the site perfectly.
I had to make a few alterations to the width of the page, since the site had to host a photo gallery and I always dislike the thin themes. I also had to make some changes to the text sizes as well, my reasoning for this was that the client and the intended audience are very likely to struggle with very small lettering. Instead of absolute text sizes I used percentages and relative sizes. For the most part the theme is exactly the same.
As the client was “IT challenged” I had to find a gallery that integrated into the website but would also provided a simple authoring mechanism. I tried many different plugins even looked at switching to some diferent photo blogging software but none really met the requirements. I finally chose the Layzest Gallery, it is quite simple to upload and author images without sacrificing … well anything.
To top it off, I plugged in a load Google webmaster tools to provide some nice feedback.
